About Alamos, Sonora
__

Alamos, which was once the most important colonial city of Northern Mexico, is in the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains where the Sonoran desert meets the tropics. Silver was discovered during the 1600's, and the town quickly became a center of government and culture. Alamos at one point could boast the largest silver mint in the world. When the silver was no longer plentiful, interest in the area died, and the town nearly disappeared.

Alamos was brought back to life however, and restored in large part by investors from the United States and Canada. The beautiful colonial architecture and magical setting below Mt. Alamos, combined with solid enthusiasm from the local Mexicans, has made this place irresistible for many.

Today, it is a town of about 10,000 people, with an expatriate community of around 200 households, traditionally retired couples, and artists who have found their haven in Old Mexico. More recently still, working couples with children who wish to experience a high quality of lifestyle, have begun moving to Alamos. These couples are either finding opportunities for work within Mexico, commute, or use telecommunications to stay connected to offices in the United States and Canada. Although off the beaten path in Southern Sonora, Alamos is still only a days drive from Tucson, has it's own paved airport for small planes, and is only an hour and fifteen minutes from a commercial airport (Ciudad Obregon).
